The Butterworth Hall at Warwick Arts Centre was the venue for the Coventry Jubilee Rotary Club's Young Entertainer of the Year Award. This is a competition held between the local secondary schools of Coventry who put forward an act. There are a group of judges who determine their top 3 acts and then an audience vote for their top 2 favourites. Having been in attendance last year I felt the talent this year was even stronger. We saw individual singers, guitarists, bands, dance groups and...

Henley in Arden invited us to their theatre evening at the Priory Theatre at Kenilworth. We have over the years been to many presentations at this theatre - all very good. This time it was the turn of a Noel Coward play. The actors made a great job of a play that had some very long monologues and it was certainly entertaining. It was the first time I had sat in the circle but it was a great view and is a really snug little theatre. The theatre was full and everyone seemed to be enjoying...

We look forward to this event every year. Geoff, from my club, wanted to set off early so he arrived for 10am but we set off an hour later. The morning started sunny and warm and stayed dry most of the time we were walking with only a few spots of rain. The ground was a little muddy in places but nothing a pair of good walking boots couldn't manage. It was great to see lots of people on the walk, some with their dogs and many in groups of friends. We stopped at Ebrington Village Hall and had...

A frustrating journey through slow traffic meant I got to the Rotaract meeting 20 minutes late. However, I did get there. It was good to catch up with news on the membership drive which seems to have bought another 8 prospective members. They had made a great display and decorated t-shirts to advertise themselves.
I met with the Board members to discuss the way forward. They are planning a social event to celebrate the end of exams and will plan a fundraising event in the future.I collected...

One of the elements of being President Elect of a Rotary Club in Coventry is to start attending the Disabled Sports Committee meeting in preparation for the event held in the November of your year as President. I had been unable to attend the last committee meeting so was determined to attend this one. We met in the Board Room of the Excel Sports Centre where the event is held.
The committee has several members who have organised this event for years for which we should all be grateful. It...

Clive organised a fantastic evening for us. He arranged for 1940s restored vans to be outside the village hall and camouflage nets to cover the entrance to the venue. The hall was decorated with bunting, wartime posters, union flag table decorations and with the fancy dress worn by many people it was as though we had been transported back in time.
The entertainment was great with songs and impressions from the era allowing those attending to join in or dance whichever they wished. There was...

The Rotary Club could not meet at its usual venue so Richard organised a visit for us to the Wood Farm Brewery near Wolvey. Although we did not have a tour of the brewery several members managed to taste a significant number of the beers on offer and we were able to see the vats through the windows of the bar. This was a very relaxed evening with a lot of laughter and fun - just what we wanted it to be.

After the District Assembly I decided I wanted club officers to be able to get together to start planning for next year. They graciously came to my home in a week when there were 2 events already in it. We met late as I had to get back from a late work meeting but I did manage to put some snacks out with the drinks (the advantage of being able to bake the night before).
We reviewed where the club is, what we want to pursue as club officers in differenct avenues of service and what the...

A very pleasant surprise for me this year was the availability of vegetarian sausages for the baps that are often served up before the assembly starts which I admit was very welcome. I was delighted to be supported by five members of the club who came along - all of whom have roles to play next year. Steve Cartwright took us through his aims for the year first and then we heard from Peter Davey, RIBI Membership Chairman. He shared thoughts on the concept of a satellite club. We...

Straight after the RIBI Conference I found my way to a Bournemouth hotel for the RGBI meeting. Six Districts were represented by Rotaractors and four District Rotaract Chairmen (Rotarians) were also there as well as the Rotaract Resource Group Chairman. Executive members were elected which means RGBI is in a better position than it has been at the beginning of a year for several years - 10 posts filled.
Discussions covered the development of a new website and DVD plans to advertise...

A lovely journey down on the train got me to Bournemouth in plenty of time for the first plenary session of the RIBI Conference. Paul met me there when he managed to get across from Swindon. We heard the RI President and Lloyd Grossman amongst others. It was a very good session and it was good to see a very relaxed atmosphere and dress code around the place. The House of Friendship was extensive and covered many charities as well as Rotary areas of service.
The evening saw a concert given by...

For a change I got to a meeting early so was able to have something to eat before the meeting began. There are many aspects to the Youth programmes so there was a lot of business to cover. Plans for the coming year as well as the present status of projects were discussed. A seminar is planned for the beginning of July so discussions about its layout and content was had. The District Assembly was also planned for and we were all set the task of making our slides for our slots at the breakout...

In District 1060 we have a great opportunity that not all Rotarians get the chance of around the world. Whilst District Officers are trained at the RIBI Assembly there is an opportunity for Rotarians in RIBI to come and hear the RI President speak while he is here for the Assembly and as the Assembly is held in Birmingham we have the shortest distances to travel. It was good to see many Rotarians from District 1060 there and see the distances some other Rotarians were prepared to...

A very friendly welcome awaited me at Yardley and Sheldon Rotary Club, as always. The golf course gave a lovely backdrop to the meeting. It was great to see some associate members there who may contemplate joining the club in the future. It was the Club's AGM so it was good to hear of all that it has done over the past year. I was given the chance to talk about the new Rotaract Club at Aston University and share the expectations of a sponsoring Rotary Club. Yardley and Sheldon has had a...

It was good to go on a fellowship visit to Kenilworth Rotary Club which I have not visited for quite a while. The purpose of my visit was to meet Iliyana from Warwick University who is interested in re-starting the Rotaract Club at the university and to discuss with Philip Southwell how we could go about getting it restarted. The meeting itself gave a great opportunity to enjoy Rotary friendship. The speaker informed us of a project supported by Kenilworth Rotary Club in...
