Linking two Rotary programmes - Youth Exchange and the Ambassadorial Scholarships - allowed us to bring together a wonderful group for a trip to the Tower Hill Landmark Trust property in the City of St Davids on the west coast of Wales. Lorna and I were joined by Niki and Hana from the Czech Republic and Asca and Maiko from Japan for three days and two nights in what has to be the warmest Landmark Trust property we have visited!
Thw 220 mile trek over to St Davids did give us a few hours...

It was Amanda's final presentation to a Rotary Club and President Rosie, a long time supporter of the Youth Exchange programmes, kicked things off in a wonderful way. She gave Amanda a very special present - a necklace that had been made locally in Birmingham.
We provided a form of 'double act' for the evening's speaker slot. I began with an update on Youth Exchange generally, starting with a nice connection back to a speaker from two years ago - Sandra Vasiliauskaite from Lithuania - whom...

Coventry Phoenix Rotary Club helds its 2009 Indian Cultural Evening on Friday 8th May. The whole event was thoroughly enjoyable, combining a variety of aspects of Indian culture - including dancing demonstrations and food (with an "English" alternative). There was even an opportunity for the women to dress up, courtesy of President Elect Kala Patel's extensive wardrobe!
Lorna and I attended with a few guests - Amanda (on Rotary Youth Exchange from Brazil), Hannah (on a Rotary...

This is a true account from a Rotarian host in the USA. It covers the some of uncertainty that can surround this role and give a great impression of the whole experience. I have to say that I could identify with pretty much everything that is said here, from my own experiences over the years.
Life with Borna
After our Rotary exchanges in 2007-08, our club was seriously considering no longer participating. However, the club president determined that the program was too important to...

Amanda had a speaking engagement at the Rotary Club of Coventry Breakfast this morning. As usual, she had worked hard on rewriting/updating her presentation the night before and had everything packed and ready for the early start - everything but some decent speakers that were needed to get the best out of the video that she had added...
We left in plenty of time for the meeting, only to find that what used to be the parking area used by the Club was now a building site! After a little...

Lorna and I attended the RIBI (Rotary in Britain and Ireland) Conference in Edinburgh over the weekend. We were able to take with us Amanda Amaral (Long Term Youth Exchange from Brazil), Hannah Johnson (Ambassadorial Scholar from Washington State, USA), Sasha Chou (Ambassadorial Scholar from Taiwan) and Eriko Iwata (Ambassadorial Scholar from Japan). Pat and Jan Denning were kind enough to take Sasha and Eriko up to Edinburgh on the Friday morning, while the rest of us followed in the...

The tiny island of Lundy can be found a few miles from the Devon coast, not far from Bideford and Ilfracombe. It is owned and managed by the Landmark Trust and they have several properties on the island that are available for rent. They have their own supply ship, the MS Oldenburg, which can be used for day trips to Lundy, and this is what we (a party of five from four different countries - Brazil, Japan, the USA and the UK) did on the 14th April.
Visiting Lundy is something I had wanted to...
