A lovely journey down on the train got me to Bournemouth in plenty of time for the first plenary session of the RIBI Conference. Paul met me there when he managed to get across from Swindon. We heard the RI President and Lloyd Grossman amongst others. It was a very good session and it was good to see a very relaxed atmosphere and dress code around the place. The House of Friendship was extensive and covered many charities as well as Rotary areas of service.
The evening saw a concert given by...

In District 1060 we have a great opportunity that not all Rotarians get the chance of around the world. Whilst District Officers are trained at the RIBI Assembly there is an opportunity for Rotarians in RIBI to come and hear the RI President speak while he is here for the Assembly and as the Assembly is held in Birmingham we have the shortest distances to travel. It was good to see many Rotarians from District 1060 there and see the distances some other Rotarians were prepared to...

Paul and I drove straight from my club's charter anniversary up to Wakefield (arriving at the hotel about 1.30am) to give us a chance of getting to York on the Saturday morning in time to meet the other District Governors of 2009-10 before the day's events began. Most of the other DGs got there on Friday evening and enjoyed a visit to the Lord Mayor's Parlour.
Saturday morning started with a look around the Railway Museum which is always impressive especially to the couple of past DGs who...

A packed church of family, friends and Rotarians was present to give Neill Hill the funeral he so richly deserved. It was full of hymns and music and wonderful tributes to him. There were several past RIBI Presidents as well as Ray Burman, this year's President, there as well as Rotarians from our District who all have many lovely memories of Neill. Tributes were given by Ron Southam on behalf of Providence Mission and David Morgan on behalf of Rotary. Liz, Neill's daughter, gave a beautiful...

Several local clubs came to visit Meriden Rotary Club to hear the RIBI President speak. Several clubs had many members there which gave the evening a great atmosphere. My own had eight of us and it was a chance to get to know each other better over dinner as well as to meet up with friends from around the district.
It is the lovely thing after you have been District Governor to be able to meet and talk with so many Rotarians who you have met over the past few years on your visits to clubs...

Little did I expect to be at RIBI Assembly again. I thought my time was over for attending in the year that I was DGE but then I was asked to help run the Meet the Presidents' Event last year. So I was even more surprised to be called this year because I had agreed to be Rotaract Officer next year (not previously a post invited to attend). So I duly turned up on Friday afternoon in glorious sunshine to the Metropole Hotel at the NEC with almost 1000 other Rotarians for a weekend of training....

RIBI Headquarters at Alcester hosted a meeting of Thanks for Life Coordinators from around Great Britain and Ireland. The day was beautiful when we arrived and just typically it was raining by the time we came out of our meeting! For me it was nice to catch up with 3 IPDGs as well as looking at what clubs/districts are doing for Thanks for Life week in February. Our first focus was on the crocus planting - over 5.2 million bulbs ordered - and the website created to share this information with...

Although outside of the Rotary year this was officially the final event of the year - the RIBI Handover. Paul and I went up to Glasgow on the Saturday and stayed over so we would be there on time for the lunch. Obviously, it was made up of mainly Scottish rotarians but there were 2 additional outgoing District Governors (me and Dick Parsley from 1070) and several incoming District Governors. The weather was not at all good on the Sunday but the hotel was nice and there were probably about 200...

A 2 hour drive took us down to Brentwood to attend the RIBI Final of the Young Musician Competition. It was great to see members of Solihull Rotary Club and their partners and Bryan and Sandra Carpenter there as well to support our young pianist (only 11 years old). Unfortunately, our vocalist was ill and could not attend.
The talent on display was amazing and the range of music was varied so that there was something for everyone. I heard pieces I'd never heard before and was just stunned by...

Stratford High School was the venue for the RIBI Youth Speaks Final. Seven teams from around the country took part in the Intermediate and eight in the Senior competitions. Our Rotarians did a good job at hosting the event and ensured that everyone was well catered for. A wonderful spread of food was laid out for everyone in the sports hall - there was a huge amount.
The 2 competitions ran in parallel to each other and we had a team in each competition. I was able to get between...

A few hours drive saw us in sunny Bournemouth just in time for the start of the RIBI Conference. It was great to see so many of our own District there to support David Fowler at the conference of his year. The speakers were great and you left each session on a high.
We heard amazing stories especially from Operation Starfish which helps those with prominent stammers to speak - the results are amazing. I don't think there were any dry eyes after hearing one sufferer tell us of the joy of...

Incoming Club Presidents and others came to the Metropole Hotel to hear the incoming RI President Ray Klinginsmith. He had a relaxed approach and shared his vision for next year in a way that was easy to follow. There was a good number of incoming Presidents there to hear him as well as all those District Officers who were attending the RIBI Assembly.
The District Officers then went off for their training sessions and incoming Presidents stayed together to hear input from all of the resource...

296 people attended the District 1060 and RIBI joint handover at the National Motorcycle Museum on Sunday 28th June 2009. Several people took advantage of the free admission to the motorcycle museum itself whilst incoming and outgoing RIBI Presidents and District 1060 District Governors climbed on a bike for photographs (much to the worry of museum staff).
The museum put on a wonderful spread and were very helpful as numbers changed even on the day of the event (even to within 15...
