Paul and I drove straight from my club's charter anniversary up to Wakefield (arriving at the hotel about 1.30am) to give us a chance of getting to York on the Saturday morning in time to meet the other District Governors of 2009-10 before the day's events began. Most of the other DGs got there on Friday evening and enjoyed a visit to the Lord Mayor's Parlour.

A pleasant drive through Norfolk countryside took me to Norwich for the first reunuion for the District Governors of 2009-10. The majority of us had managed to get there. A pleasant chance to catch up over dinner was given to us on the Friday evening which I just got to on time after driving across after work.

The last General Council meeting of the year. Most District Governors were able to make it with their partners. There was, as usual, a lot of business to get through but we managed it in the time allocated. Although we had business to get through there was quite a relaxed atmosphere and we all enjoyed being in each other's company again.

The General Council Meeting started just after lunch on Monday (to allow those travelling to arrive in time). Prior to the meeting there is a reasonable amount of paperwork to read so that you are ready to make decisions at the meeting. A lot of debate does take place and it does take the equivalent of 2 half days to get through the agenda. We have done a whole day before which saves those of us working from having to take 2 days off work but it is very intensive.

It is good to meet with other District Governors to see how things are going in their District and what they are getting up to. The General Council Meeting is long and covers a lot of ground. It can be hard going at times - well 29 governors are not going to agree about everything. You have to be gracious if a vote goes the other way to how you have voted and then own the decision as it is like being in the cabinet. There was a little time available for lunch but the...

A drive over to RIBI Headquarters at Alcester for the first General Council Meeting of the year. It was good to meet up with the other 28 District Governors in RIBI and see how things are going for them. I try not to do too much comparison otherwise I start worrying about all the things I haven't done (I still came away with a page of jobs to do and that was after staying up late on Sunday evening trying to get a few things done!).
