It was lovely to be invited to join the caravanning fellowship members from Districts 1060 and 1210 for lunch and their general meeting, even if we don't own a caravan.
A lovely lunch was provided at the Lea Marston Hotel and we had the chance to meet up with old acquaintances and to get to know some new people. The atmosphere was very relaxed and congenial and all seemed to enjoy themselves.
The business meeting was interesting and it was good, as an 'outsider', to hear about all of...

Warwick Avon linked with the Warwick School to put on a fantastic jazz concert. Different groups from within the school performed at the Bridge Theatre playing a variety of types of jazz. The standard was amazing and it was a real treat to be so beautifully entertained.
The real treat and pleasant surprise was when the Club President got up to do an introduction to the charity they were raising money for, The Jennifer Trust, and then performed a song on a trumpet with one of...

I was glad to be able to add this event to my diary. It is always a joy to hear youngsters sharing their views on the world. We were entertained by 4 teams as a few had to pull out this week but the quality was still there. We heard about a range of topics including the rich and famous, inequalities and age restrictions.
It was nice to have a chance to tell them a little about the work of Rotary and other opportunities for the youth to take advantage of through Rotary.
Well done to the...

Neil Yorke is always generous and opens up his offices for us to hold the finance committee meetings at. The 2 meetings held in the year are always very detailed and hold a lot of discussion about our responsibility for the money given to District to manage by members through the capitation.
The purpose of tonight's meeting was to look at the proposed budget for 2010-11. David Tippin, Alan Wheatley and Neil Yorke put a lot of preparation into the budget before the meeting. The committee's...

A very well attended event by Rotarians, their families and friends. Over 100 people were there and we had a great evening. We started with the Address to the Haggis which David Bell, last year's Mayor of Solihull, said (as well as playing the bagpipes). We had a lovely meal and the evening moved well.
The entertainment of the evening was brilliant. I must admit I wasn't sure what to expect when told there was a lady playing the ukulele but she was superb and kept us laughing all evening. It...

It was nice to receive an impromptu invite to dinner with Chrissy and Eric which we gladly accepted. We had a great evening of lovely food prepared by Chrissy, great conversation provided by all and a good bit of reflection on our year so far.
The hours passed very quickly and soon became a very early morning but none of us minded because we were so relaxed. The great thing about Rotary and Inner Wheel is you make new friends. Chrissy and I did not know each other...

Our second Burns' Night in 2 evenings but they were a little different to each other. Having had a slight accident in the car (not our fault) on the way we eventually found the correct country lane to Wishaw Country Club! It is a lovely venue and the food is stunning - it is one of those places where it is hard to stop eating although you know you should.
Sandy Aiken did a superb job of running the evening - addressing the haggis and giving the immortal toast to name a few of his jobs...

Many people turned out in very wet conditions for the funeral of Tom Roberts, a founder member of Kenilworth Rotary Club. It was lovely to have our own Peter Jackson leading the service. Many members of Kenilworth Club were there and others from other clubs as well which I am sure comforted the family as they could see how well loved and liked Tom was.
From Peter's address Tom struck one as a man who was very committed, having been in his Lodge and Rotary club for nearly 50 years and at...

The Sailing Club at Draycote Water was a lovely venue for the Burns Night. Nearly 100 people were there to enjoy a traditional meal and of course the whisky (others of us were there to drive those enjoying the whisky home). I was well catered for with a vegetarian haggis which was lovely. The traditional elements were there with the haggis being piped in and the Address to the Haggis.
Peter Rollason gave us a tour of Scotland via the distilleries. He has been at Southam 2000's Burns' Night...

After a week of meetings having been cancelled because of the snow it was nice to have a meeting go ahead. I met with Jim Sleight to look at where we are with new clubs and future possibilities as well as how we might support Rotaract to increase its membership. He and Dhiran are working well together to support Rotaract and trying to encourage Rotaractors to join Rotary when coming to the end of their time in Rotaract.
I had hoped we would have 2 new Rotary clubs this year but...

Despite snow and freezing temperatures (minus nine degrees at the venue) I drove over to attend the breakfast meeting of the proposed club of Alcester Alauna. A few members and a prospective member braved the weather and the ice and snow of the hotel car park. A nice atmosphere and a lot to celebrate in terms of their fundraising efforts so far. Seven charities will receive donations and both the RYLA and Young Carers boat project will be supported.
It was certainly worth the drive to meet...

Unfortunately the big snowfall the night before meant that some could not attend the service, not necessarily because of the road conditons but more those on paths. However, several members of Solihull Rotary Club did make the memorial service for one of their members. It was good to hear of his long membership in Rotary and his commitment to his family. It was good to hear of many people's memories of him and have people speak who knew him well.
The family put on refreshments in the...

A bright day with hardly a cloud in the sky met us at Shustoke reservoir where we started our gentle walk through the countryside with another family from Bedworth Rotary Club. It was amusing to see ducks and gulls walking on ice where there should have been water but around the other side of the reservoir to find swans, geese and grebes swimming and diving in the water. The frozen ground was a godsend as you could see how muddy it would normally be. The weather was perfect for a walk (not...
